There is a distinct magic to early autumn in the garden. As the light turns golden and the morning air takes on a crisp edge, it’s time for one of the most rewarding rituals of the year: gathering the final harvest.
Before the first hard frosts arrive, home growers across the UK are harvesting those last precious sun-ripened tomatoes and podding gorgeous, speckled Borlotti beans. It’s a joyful, slow-paced task, and one that belongs right at the heart of the kitchen table.
Bringing the Garden Indoors
Whether you’re sorting heirloom tomatoes, shelling beans for a heart-warming autumn stew, or scrubbing soil off freshly dug root veg, prepping garden produce can be surprisingly messy.
Damp soil, crushed berry juices, and stray pod husks have a habit of finding their way into the grain of wooden dining tables or staining traditional linen cloths. But garden prep shouldn't mean worrying about your furniture.
This is where a premium wipeable tablecloth becomes your best kitchen assistant.
For our recent autumn harvest prep, we styled our table with the iconic William Morris Strawberry Thief in Plum.
With its rich jewel tones, intricate floral motifs, and classic British heritage feel, this pattern feels naturally suited to the autumn season. It brings a touch of country-house elegance to everyday kitchen tasks, proving that practical doesn't have to mean plain.
2 Quick Tips for Storing Your Final Harvest
- Pod and Freeze Fresh Beans: Borlotti and runner beans podded in early autumn freeze brilliantly. Lay them flat on a tray to freeze individually before popping them into a bag for winter soups.
- Ripen Green Tomatoes indoors: If frost is forecast and you still have green tomatoes on the vine, pick them and store them indoors in a paper bag with a banana to encourage ripening.
