Choosing colour

When it comes to choosing the colour for your décor,  wouldn’t it be so much easier if you could check a colour chart, pick the colour you want and then find all the items you need in exactly that colour?!  We all know that is exactly how it doesn’t happen.  So many things can determine our choice, like the mood we’re in, the season we’re currently in, that particular time in our life, interior magazines …….. The list is endless. With so many factors behind why we choose the colour, there are just as many factors to make us want to change it all over again. We’ve put together a few tips to help you decide which direction you want to go in and to make sure the room ends just as you wanted it to.

Tip No 1….. Think about the mood you want in the room.  If it’s a bedroom you may want subtle and gentle colours to give a relaxing and comfortable room.  If it’s a dining room, you may want rich, luxurious colours to plump up the room.

Tip No 2…. Consider the room as if it were outside. Darker shades on the floor (replicating the earth), medium shades to cover the walls as you look straight ahead (buildings and eye lines) and finally light shades up above (the sky).

Tip No 3…. Take a good look at the main feature that you may want in that room. It may be a piece of art or a cloth, or an ornament for instance.  If you already have a feature designated, look at the main colour and then choose a colour one or two shades lighter for the walls, this will really make the piece stand out.

Tip No 4…. When you have finally picked the colour you want, try the paint on a small wall first to ensure that one wall is complete quickly and you can see results sooner.  If you don’t like it, then it’s not such a big task to change it.

And Tip No 5…. Just have fun with it! Let your personality shine through and know that you don’t have to conform to the latest trends, or follow the colour wheel to the exact shade.  When it comes to decorating your home just remember that it’s you who lives there, and nobody else.
